Delivered device provisioning, secure MQTT ingestion, OTA firmware updates, and real-time telemetry at platform scale.
Context
Syntrix IoT was scaling a mixed consumer and industrial fleet without a unified provisioning model or firmware lifecycle. Devices were onboarded manually; OTA failures created support storms. Corexel mapped device families, certificate rotation requirements, and regional telemetry SLAs before committing to platform primitives.
Challenge
Provisioning had to be secure at 12K+ devices without bricking during OTA. MQTT federation across regions needed consistent topic contracts while keeping blast radius small when a broker degraded. Telemetry SLAs had to survive bursty firmware campaigns and partial network partitions.
Architecture
A provisioning service issues device certificates and activation tokens; AWS IoT Core handles broker federation with TLS everywhere. OTA orchestration uses canary groups, automatic rollback on health checks, and job state machines visible in the ops dashboard. Stream processors normalize telemetry into PostgreSQL for fleet health scoring; React consoles expose provisioning, campaign status, and alert routing.
Delivery
Rollout proceeded by device family with canary OTA cohorts and fleet health dashboards gating each expansion. OTA success rate held at 99.2%; provisioning crossed 12K devices with documented operator procedures. Corexel stayed through the first global firmware campaign, then transferred on-call playbooks to Syntrix platform ops.
